BECCS projects in Europe
10 developers, active in 4 EU countries. Every entry has at least one piece of evidence that does not come from the developer. Most recent check 2026-10-14.
What it is
Biomass is burned or processed for energy, and the CO₂ from the flue gas is captured and stored permanently underground. Because the plants took that carbon from the air, storing it removes it.
For buyers, in short
| CRCF unit | Permanent carbon removal |
| CRCF methodology |
In force Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/285, in force 7 May 2026. 15-year activity period for CCS projects.
|
| Certified CRCF units today | None. No certification scheme has been recognised yet, so no project can carry a CRCF unit today. |
| SBTi net-zero | Removals are the only credit type the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 accepts for neutralising residual emissions (criterion C46). |
| CSRD reporting | Under ESRS E1-7 (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2772), removals and credits are disclosed separately. Gross Scope 1 to 3 stays unadjusted, credits are not netted against it. A simplified version of the ESRS is in progress. |
| EU ETS | The Commission's EU ETS proposal of 17 July 2026 would auction 250 million extra allowances over 2031 to 2040 and use the revenue to buy CRCF-certified BioCCS and DACCS centrally. The removals would not enter the ETS directly. It is a proposal and still under negotiation. |
| Price range | $200 to $600 per tonne (worldwide, all registries). The report describes these as current costs. |

Before you buy
- How much of the CO₂ is biogenic? Only CO₂ from biomass counts as a removal. Plants that also burn fossil fuel or mixed waste capture both, so ask how the biogenic share is measured.
- Has the project reached a final investment decision? Most European BECCS projects are still before it, and deliveries are years away. Ask for the delivery schedule, not just the volume.
- Where and how is the CO₂ stored? It has to go into permanent geological storage, which in Europe today mostly means North Sea storage sites reached by ship or pipeline.
