Biochar carbon removal projects in Europe
8 developers, active in 6 EU countries, 6 of them with units issued in a public registry. Every entry has at least one piece of evidence that does not come from the developer. Most recent check 2026-10-13.
What it is
Biomass such as wood residues or husks is heated without oxygen. A large share of its carbon ends up in a stable char that is applied to soils or built into materials, where it stays for centuries.
For buyers, in short
| CRCF unit | Permanent carbon removal |
| CRCF methodology |
In force Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/285, permanence based on 200 years.
|
| Certified CRCF units today | None. No certification scheme has been recognised yet, so no project can carry a CRCF unit today. |
| SBTi net-zero | Removals are the only credit type the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 accepts for neutralising residual emissions (criterion C46). |
| CSRD reporting | Under ESRS E1-7 (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2772), removals and credits are disclosed separately. Gross Scope 1 to 3 stays unadjusted, credits are not netted against it. A simplified version of the ESRS is in progress. |
| Price range | €124 per tonne in September 2026, by the CORC Biochar Price Index (CORCCHAR) (Puro-certified biochar worldwide). The index tracks actual transactions of Puro-certified biochar credits, so it reflects what buyers paid, not what production costs. It is updated monthly. |

Before you buy
- Where does the biochar go? Permanence depends on the end use, in soil, in concrete or elsewhere. The CRCF methodology calculates permanence on a 200-year basis.
- Is the plant in the EU? Only activities in the EU can be certified under the CRCF. A credit from a plant outside the EU will not become a CRCF unit, however good it is.
- Are the units issued or sold ahead? The CRCF issues units only after the removal has happened and a certification audit has confirmed it.
