Carbon farming projects in Europe
12 developers, active in 13 EU countries, 3 of them with units issued in a public registry. Every entry has at least one piece of evidence that does not come from the developer. Most recent check 2026-10-07.
What it is
Farmers change how they manage land so that it holds more carbon, for example with cover crops, less tillage or trees on farmland. Rewetting drained peatland works differently: it stops the peat from breaking down and releasing CO₂.
For buyers, in short
| CRCF unit | Carbon farming sequestration for soil carbon, agroforestry and woody crops. Soil emission reduction for peatland rewetting. |
| CRCF methodology |
Adopted Carbon farming, soils: Delegated Regulation C(2026)4666, adopted 10 Jul 2026. Scrutiny by Parliament and Council, then Official Journal, then in force 20 days later.
Adopted Peatland rewetting: Delegated Regulation C(2026)4666, adopted 10 Jul 2026. Scrutiny by Parliament and Council, then Official Journal, then in force 20 days later.
|
| Certified CRCF units today | None. No certification scheme has been recognised yet, so no project can carry a CRCF unit today. |
| SBTi net-zero | Removals are the only credit type the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 accepts for neutralising residual emissions (criterion C46). Peatland rewetting creates soil emission reduction units. They are not removals, so they do not count for neutralisation. |
| CSRD reporting | Under ESRS E1-7 (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2772), removals and credits are disclosed separately. Gross Scope 1 to 3 stays unadjusted, credits are not netted against it. A simplified version of the ESRS is in progress. |
| Price range | €35 per tonne on average across all methods, with agricultural projects priced above forestry ones (Label Bas-Carbone, France only). No independent, current price source for carbon farming elsewhere in Europe was found. |

Before you buy
- Which unit are you buying? Soil carbon and peatland rewetting sit on the same page but are different CRCF units, and only the removal counts for neutralisation.
- Are the units issued after verified results or in advance? The CRCF issues units only after a certification audit has confirmed the result.
- How long is the activity monitored, and what happens if carbon is released again? The CRCF certifies carbon farming over a defined activity period of at least five years.
