CRCF for buyers, answered.
The questions buyers ask most, answered in a few sentences each, with a link to the detail.
What you can buy today
Can I buy CRCF-certified units today? Not yet
Not yet. No certification scheme has been recognised, so no project can carry a CRCF unit, and the first units are expected in 2027. Today you can find the developers who are heading there, see where each one stands and secure supply early. Browse the directory.
What can I buy in the meantime?
Credits from the same developers under today's standards, such as Puro.earth, Isometric, Verra, Gold Standard or national labels like the Label Bas-Carbone. Nine certification schemes have applied for CRCF recognition and are under assessment by the Commission. Ask the developer whether its standard is among them. Where recognition stands.
How do I know whether a project can become CRCF-certified?
Three things have to come together: the project is located in the EU, it produces one of the four CRCF unit types, and a CRCF methodology for the activity is in force. Methodologies for DACCS, BioCCS and biochar are in force. Those for soil carbon, peatland rewetting and afforestation were adopted in July 2026 and are not yet in force. Improved forest management and storage in products are still in development. The CRCF, explained.
What it counts for
Does it count towards my SBTi net-zero target? Removals yes
Removals do, other credits do not. Under the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0, only removals can neutralise residual emissions (criterion C46), so soil emission reductions such as peatland rewetting do not count for neutralisation. The final standard keeps CRCF removals eligible and asks companies to report the authorisation status of removals that count toward the EU's climate target. V2.0 becomes mandatory for new targets from 2028. Buyers guide.
How do I report it under CSRD? Separately
Separately from your emissions. Under ESRS E1-7 (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2772), removals and credits are disclosed on their own, and gross Scope 1 to 3 stays unadjusted, so credits are never netted against it. A simplified version of the ESRS is in progress. Buyers guide.
Can I use international credits too? Capped, later
To a limited, capped extent. The amended European Climate Law, adopted in March 2026, sets a legally binding 90 percent net reduction by 2040, with at least 85 percent achieved domestically and up to 5 percent from high-quality international credits under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, in the second half of the 2030s. The detailed rules follow in post-2030 legislation. Source: European Commission, 2040 climate target.
Will the EU itself buy removals? Proposed
Possibly, from 2031. The Commission's EU ETS proposal of July 2026 would auction 250 million extra allowances over 2031 to 2040 and use the revenue to buy CRCF-certified BioCCS and DACCS centrally. It is a proposal, still under negotiation, and the removals would not enter the ETS directly. The EU Buyers' Club.
How to choose and buy
Which method should I buy?
That depends on what you want to claim. For neutralising residual emissions only removals count, which rules out soil emission reductions such as peatland rewetting. Beyond that, methods differ in price, delivery date and how long the carbon stays stored, and each method page sets out those facts with the developers behind it: biochar, BECCS, direct air capture, carbon farming and forestry.
What does it cost?
No CRCF price exists yet, because no CRCF unit has been issued. For today's credits, prices depend on the method, contract length, volume, delivery date and whether units are already issued. Each method page gives an indicative range with its source and date, and our removal calculator turns your own target year and residual emissions into tonnes and an annual cost. Choose a method.
Am I buying issued units or a promise? Ask first
Ask before you sign. Some credits are issued after the removal has been measured, others are sold before it happens, and offtake contracts pay today for future delivery. Paying in advance is common and fine as long as you know what you are buying. The CRCF itself issues units only after the removal has happened and a certification audit has confirmed it.
Where do I buy?
Directly from the developer, through a marketplace or broker, or for future CRCF units through the EU Buyers' Club. Each profile names the developer and, where available, links to its website. We do not sell credits and take no commission. The EU Buyers' Club.
How do I check a developer before I buy?
Start with the profile. It shows the status on our three-step scale, the registry, at least one piece of evidence that does not come from the developer and the date we last checked. Each method page adds three points to check for that method. How we compile the directory.
About CRCFProjects
How do you verify the developers?
On three tiers: developer-stated, registry-verified and CRCF-certified. Registry-verified means we found the project certified, or its units issued, in the public registry of an established standard. Every entry also needs at least one piece of evidence that does not come from the developer, and we never label beyond what that source supports. How we verify.
Is CRCFProjects affiliated with the EU? No
No. It is an independent information resource, not affiliated with the European Commission, and it takes no commission on any sale. The official EU registry for CRCF units is due by the end of 2028. About us.
