Direct air capture projects in Europe

6 developers, active in 2 EU countries. Every entry has at least one piece of evidence that does not come from the developer. Most recent check 2026-10-07.

What it is

Machines pull CO₂ directly out of the ambient air, and the CO₂ is then stored underground or mineralised. The process needs a lot of energy, so where that energy comes from matters for the net result.

For buyers, in short

CRCF unitPermanent carbon removal
CRCF methodology
In force Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/285, in force 7 May 2026.
Certified CRCF units todayNone. No certification scheme has been recognised yet, so no project can carry a CRCF unit today.
SBTi net-zeroRemovals are the only credit type the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 accepts for neutralising residual emissions (criterion C46).
CSRD reportingUnder ESRS E1-7 (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2772), removals and credits are disclosed separately. Gross Scope 1 to 3 stays unadjusted, credits are not netted against it. A simplified version of the ESRS is in progress.
EU ETSThe Commission's EU ETS proposal of 17 July 2026 would auction 250 million extra allowances over 2031 to 2040 and use the revenue to buy CRCF-certified BioCCS and DACCS centrally. The removals would not enter the ETS directly. It is a proposal and still under negotiation.
Price range$500 to $1,200 per tonne (worldwide, all registries). The report describes these as current costs. It expects them to fall towards $200 to $400 by 2030, depending on energy prices and scale.
Source: World Economic Forum with Oliver Wyman, Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies: Market Overview and Offtake, March 2026. Indicative, not an offer. Prices depend on contract length, volume, delivery date, whether units are already issued or sold ahead, the registry and scarcity. No CRCF unit has been issued yet, so no CRCF price exists.

Status is our own three-step scale, not EU terminology. Developer-stated means the developer says it; Registry-verified means we found issued units in a public registry. How this list is compiled
